Playground Art & Coffee Brings Creative Maker Space to San Diego's North Park

San Diego’s North Park neighborhood is getting a coffeehouse that wants you to forget about being a grown-up for a while.

Playground Art & Coffee opens March 26 at 3043 University Avenue, taking over the former Verbena Kitchen space with 55 seats of 1970s-inspired whimsy. Founder Spring Barnickle calls it “the culmination of a lifelong passion for food, creativity and community building”—and the menu reflects that vision with drinks you won’t find anywhere else in town.

Torque Coffee Partnership

For the espresso program, Playground partnered with Torque Coffee, a City Heights roaster run by Nanelle and Andy Newbom out of the historic Rock Palace building on El Cajon Boulevard. Torque has earned a reputation for both quality and ethics—they use “proportional pricing” that pre-pays coffee producers 20% of the retail price of roasted beans.

That attention to sourcing translates into drinks like the Hazelnut Sesame Latte, Pandan Mint Mocha, Creamsicle Cold Brew, and Ube Matcha Latte. The matcha, by the way, is ceremonial-grade and prepared by trained baristas. For those who prefer their drinks without coffee, Torque also operates a Cold Bar concept with alcohol-free cocktails packed with functional ingredients.

Pastries with Pedigree

Barnickle comes with serious culinary credentials—she previously operated a professional confectionary kitchen and developed recipes for New York Times bestselling cookbook authors. That expertise shows in the housemade pastry case: croissant bars in almond, pistachio, and chocolate varieties, plus treats like Galactic Brownies and Ube Cheesecake Bars.

More Than Just Coffee

What sets Playground apart is the maker space programming. Weekly events include “Dopamine Thursdays” for casual, low-pressure art projects; Saturday Playdates with guided step-by-step workshops; and Sunday sessions featuring chocolate tastings, coffee cuppings, and mocktail-making classes.

The design leans into the name—warm tones, soft seating, and playful details meant to evoke nostalgia and comfort. It’s intentionally positioned as an adult escape from adulting.

Why This Matters

North Park has become one of San Diego’s densest coffee neighborhoods, but Playground represents something different: a model where the coffee is excellent (thanks to a partnership with a respected local roaster) but the experience extends beyond the cup. It’s community building through creativity, with specialty coffee as the anchor.

The rolling grand opening runs March 26-28, with hours Monday through Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
